- Imam Hussain (May Allah be peached with him) was a great charecter who epitomised th essence of Islam in thought, words and actions. In all corners of the muslim world, his name lives on to represent bravery, piety and selflessness.

- This Booklet Hihglights the one event that Imam Hussain (May Allah be peached with him) was best known for, his martyrdom in Karbala. From the earliest and mosyt reliable sources, this paper charts the event leading up to the fateful battlefield, his martyrdom and the aftermath of his sacrifice. At the end of the work, there are several appendixes related tothe event, such as \'was Yazid forgiven?\' and the superiority of the day of Ashura.

- Imam Hussain\'s, may Allah be pleased with him, services to Islam are countless and precious. He lived his entire life preserving the fundamentals of Islam in words and actions.

- Wherever he went, people were astonished by his radiant character and moral conviction. In short, he came to represent the ideals of his Grandfather, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. But it is the episode of Karbala that is most associated with Imam Hussain, may Allah be pleased with him, today. Here, his brave, courageous and selfless actions left a mark on humanity until the Day of Judgement. Perhaps history will never again produce a character who epitomises sacrifice, bravery and courage better than Imam Hussain, may Allah be pleased with him.

- What follows is a brief, chronological account of the events of Imam Hussain, may Allah be pleased with him, based on reliable, Islamic sources. The classical sources I have depended upon are;

- • Tarikh al-Khulafa. Imam Jalal al-Din Abd al-Rahman ibn Abu Bakr al-Suyuti (d. 911 A.H./1505 C.E.).

- • Tarikh al-Islam. Hafiz Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Uthman al-Dhahabi (d. 748 A.H./1348 C.E.).

- • Tarikh al-Tabari. Abu Ja\'far Muhammad Jarir al-Tabari (d. 923/1517).

- • Al-Bidaya wa al-Nihaya. Hafiz ibn Kathir (d. 774/1373).

- It is interesting to note that some Muslim historians simply could not bring pen to paper to express the actual gruesome murder of Imam Hussain, may Allah be pleased with him. The great Islamic scholar and Qur\'an commentator, Imam Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, may Allah have mercy upon him, is one such example. He briefly writes in his book, Tarikh al-Khulafa (The History of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs), In the [actual] murder of Imām Hussain, may Allah be pleased with him, is a long story that the heart simply cannot express : \'\' For Indeed we Belong to Allah and to Him we Return.\'\'

- About the Author: Dr. Hafiz Ather Hussain al-Azhari is currently a lecturer in the Islamic Sciences at Hazrat Sultan Bahu Trust, Birmingham.

- Ather Hussain began his Islamic education by completing the memorisation of the Holy Qur\'an at the age of thirteen. After completing his GCSE\'s he moved to Jamia al-Karam, where he studied Arabic Grammar under the guardianship of M.I.H. Pirzada and Mawlana Abdul-Bari Sahib. In 1995, he travelled to Bhera Sharif, Pakistan, and completed the traditional seminary course with First Class Honours. Here he had an opportunity to be taught directly by Pir Karam Shah al-Azhari, may Allah shower His mercy upon him.

- Between 1996 and 1999, he studied at Al-Azhar University, Cairo, the oldest seat of Islamic learning in the world. He specialised in Hadith studies, and graduated in BA Principles of Theology in 1999. Upon returning to England, he joined the University of Birmingham, to study BA Political Science. He graduated with First Class Honours in 2003. In 2006, he completed his Mphil in Theology at the University of Birmingham on the al-Jami of al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, and he has completed his PhD (Theology) at the same institution.
